Although Fiona Ingram has been a journalist for the last fifteen years, writing a children’s book—The Secret of the Sacred Scarab—was an unexpected step, inspired by a recent trip to Egypt. The tale of the sacred scarab began life as a little anecdotal tale for her 2 nephews (then 10 and 12), who had accompanied her on the Egyptian trip. This short story grew into an award-winning children’s book, the first in the adventure series Chronicles of the Stone. The author has already completed the next book in the series—The Search for the Stone of Excalibur—a huge treat for young King Arthur fans.

Although Fiona Ingram does not have children of her own, she has an adopted teenage foster child, from an underprivileged background who is just discovering the joys of reading for pleasure. Welcome to Book Marketing Buzz, Stephan. Can we begin by having you tell us a little about your book?

My book is about showing women that there is somebody who understands them, and giving all men the information they need to understand them as well. It is about closing the communication gap and helping couples have more fulfilling and happy relationships while helping men solve the issue that so many are faced with which is a lack of sex. It is a straight forward approach to helping move marriage and all relationships in a much better direction.

What is the first thing you did to promote your book once your publisher accepted your manuscript?

The first thing I did was to utilize my social networking sites to promote the book. I already had a decent amount of friends and followers so I figured it was a good place to start.

After that, what happened?

Well I realized quickly that this isn’t enough. So I began to research all the ways I could promote my book. I started a blog and launched my website. I looked for people to review my book and eventually enlisted the services of a press release distribution to get more exposure.

What did your publisher do to promote your book?

My publisher was not really involved in the promotion of the book. They did send the book out to a couple of reviewers, but the promotion was really up to me.

What’s your opinion on blogging? Do you see that it is helping sell your book or is it not making much difference in terms of sales?

I think blogging is a good thing. I definitely think it has helped give me more exposure as well as add credibility. I can’t say it is making a big difference in sales right now, but I truly believe it has helped and will be an important piece to have in place as I continue to gain more exposure and success.

I understand using the social networks to promote your books is also an effective marketing tool. Do you find it is or isn’t?

I most definitely feel that social networking is an effective marketing tool. When you put enough time into it, you will certainly see the results. I would hate to have to be on this journey without my social networking sites.

Besides blogging and using the social networks to promote your books, what other ways are you promoting your book?

I have used press release distribution services, flyers, and book events to help me promote my book. This has opened the door to doing radio interviews and TV appearances as additional ways to promote. Also the use of blog tours such as Pump Up Your Book is also being utilized.

If you had to pick just one book marketing tool that you’ve used to promote your book, which would you say has been the most effective?

So far it has been the use of Bostick Communications press release distribution service that has been the most effective. I am looking forward to Pump Up Your Book blog tour to see if that will become an even more effective tool.

What are your experiences with offline promotions such as booksignings?

I have done a couple offline book events. They have been great for networking and creating new opportunities, but I can’t say they have been effective with sales just yet.
